There’s really nothing empowering about the Final Girl trope when you realize her existence basically serves as a guide on how a girl “should act” so that she isn’t murdered by some creepy old guy.

As Clover wrote in Her Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film, “Figuratively seen, the Final Girl is a male surrogate in things oedipal, a homoerotic stand-in…She is simply an agreedupon fiction, and the male viewer’s use of her as a vehicle for his own sadomasochistic fantasies an act of perhaps timeless dishonesty.”
