I discovered Chrissy Teigen, an American model, about a year ago after stumbling upon her Twitter feed. Admittedly, I think she’s pretty funny and I authentic, but the “cool girl” image seems to be all over everything I read or hear about her. Recently, I’ve noticed a lot of media surrounding her image on social media. This week’s reading from Buzzfeed “Jennifer Lawrence and the History of Cool Girls”, by Anne Helen Peterson, really spoke to the way that Chrissy is presented in pop culture. Like the example of Jennifer Lawrence, Chrissy is portrayed as someone who is “never polished,” always eating, and certainly as someone who doesn’t try hard. The following article, also from Buzzfeed, shows how we are supposed to believe that Chrissy is a “cool girl” and “the realest” as the title claims, but the fact of the matter is that she is performing and maintaining an image that pop culture has created for her.
